The best car I have ever driven after 48 years of car ownership

The Ioniq 5 is the best car I have driven in my 48 years of driving. It is attractive, reasonably well built, comes with all the features I need in a car. Most importantly the electric drive train is amazing. If you have not driven one take one out for a test drive. I am pretty confident you will be hooked and will not want to drive an internal combustion engine again. The acceleration is pretty impressive considering it is not billed as a fast car. The smoothness and quietness of the engine and car are exhilarating. My wife and I both live driving the Ioniq 5 EV and are always looking for excuses to take it out. We are both pretty confident we will be upgrading to another Hyundai model or the newest Ioniq in a couple of years when the technology takes the next leap forward.

I love this car, I love driving it, I love the styling, I could use a tinge more “mood” lighting in a few places but overall it’s been my favorite Hyundai.

A mix of things that I enjoy and hate. Useful car either way.

I'm happy that we leased and did not buy. We get a lot of use out of it driving around two young kids and commuting. I'm happy it's in our life right now, but wouldn't buy one for long term ownership. There's too much hassle around preferences and driver profiles (cant change while driving?!?!?). The infotainment is so close to being great, but feels more like an odd collection of features and preferences vs a consistent/intentional experience. I was really excited to use the customized buttons, but then realized they only showed things I had zero interest of using quickly. I've enjoyed one pedal driving and some of the smart cruise control, but really do not like the lane management. It seems incapable of following smooth curves and just bounces between the edges of the lane. I wouldn't trust it in wet conditions. Overall space inside is good, but realizing I'd prefer the rear to be squared off for more storage. Wide opening side doors are useful sometimes, but just not in any parking lot. I'd love this car with more of a Mazda 5 (micro-van) vibe. Give me sliding doors and as much interior space as humanly possible. The rear storage area is much more of a hassle when trying to determine if stuff fits. I shouldn't have to think this hard to use a trunk.

This car is amazing!

This car offers a smooth ride, great pickup, and long distance range. Outstanding! And it is sexy, as well. I am still getting used to some features, and I wished I had had a little more briefing on how to use some of the features, but youtube is helpful in that regard. Being able to use Tesla superchargers without an adapter is a great feature. I only wish it had come with the J1772 adapter for use at other public charging sites. But those are small quibbles with what is really an outstanding car.

Best Car EVER!

My 2025 Ioniq 5 (LTD-AWD) has got to be one of my favorite cars that I've owned. It is spacious inside yet compact enough that I feel comfortable in tight spaces. I was a little worried about going fully electric, but it has proven me wrong as it is very easy to manage charging when needed. I can't wait to take it on a long trip (so far has been within a 100-150 mile radius). It is a very smooth ride and has all the safety features that keep me honest about not creeping into someone else's lane. ...and not sure how I ever lived without the heads up display! One of my favorite benefits are the ventilated seats and heated seats/steering wheel - I find myself using that in place of a colder AC or warmer heater. Highly recommend giving it a try if you're on the fence.

I looked across the spectrum of electric vehicles and begrudgingly looked into the Ioniq 5 after many years of driving German cars. Both me and my husband were pleasantly surprised with the drive, features, and space in this SUV. I haven’t looked back.

Drives well and also drives me crazy

The car handles very well - smooth fast acceleration, crisp steering and pretty good at absorbing bumps. The interior is comfortable and feels upscale. There are lot of nice touches in the user interface - real buttons where you need them, not soft touchscreen buttons. The head up display is terrific. So why only three stars? For one thing the car drive me nuts with its constant warnings to me, the driver. "Time for a coffee break" (after only 5 minutes of driving), "Keep your eyes on the road" (they are but I wear glasses and it can't seem to deal with that), and beeping at me in heavy traffic when there are cars nearby (I know but there's nothing I can do about that -- its rush hour). These are just a few of the many many warning messages the designers of this car see fit to throw at you. And each comes with an annoying beep that also distracts you from driving. And worse, there is no way to turn them off or make them less sensitive so they occur less often. I am also not thrilled with the driving range - I have the AWD SEL model, which is supposed to have a range of about 290 miles. On the highways I drive 65 - 70, and apparently that is too fast for this car. So I get a range more like 230 miles, and in winter only about 200. I do appreciate that I can charge at Tesla stations, but there is no easy way to tell which ones will work with my car and which ones won't; - apparently only the Tesla chargers that have the latest software update are compatible. But there is no easy way to tell that ahead of time. Making route planning an adventure you'd rather not have. Finally, my steering wheel has been judged defective by the dealer, but they have no idea when the needed parts will come in. It's been over 30 days and still no word. So I'm sorry, this car has too many issues for me to love it. I am at this point, tolerating it. Lest you think I'ma technophobe, I'm an engineer with a lot of love for science and technology (when it's done right.)

Great car

Overall I love the car! The only issues I have are minor ones. Performance-wise, the car has been great. The infotainment screen - why can't it stay on the first screen? Also, it doesn't always change the seat between users properly.

Nice drive

We like our new Ioniq! It's our first EV and we were very much on the fence about whether we could make this work without home charging but the car is so fast to charge using 350kW public charger, it hasn't been an issue. One thing that would have been helpful before we bought the vehicle was if the range estimates were broken down by highway and city as we have seen a significant drop at highway speeds. Wish the seats were more comfortable. We tried all three trims but found the seats to be a bit uncomfortable on all of them - we have supplemented with additional pads.

Low mileage so far

I've only driven my new Ioniq 5 about 1,000 miles so far. While still having to check the owner's manual occasionally, most of the controls are intuitive and somewhat similar to my previous car. Ride comfort is very good, handling is very good. And now that winter's here, the immediate response of the heater is magical!

If Only the Top Went Down

From a purely mechanical perspective this is the BEST CAR EVER! We LOVE the way it preforms on the road, it feels very secure and sticks to the pavement even in the tightest turns. Additionally, in 2 months of owing it, the cost of ownership is less than 1/3 the cost of our gasoline powered car. We did install a charger in the garage, which makes it easier and more affordable than using public charging stations. And we drove it from Denver to San Diego without a single problem! The special features make it a perfect car for those of us who love to drive, but are aging and not as quick as we used to be. There are but 3 things we would change; in order of importance to us: 1. When we're at freeway speed, there is a lot of wind noise, and because there is NO engine noise, the wind noise is annoying. 2. It's black. I said I'd never have a black, gray (or silver) or white car. Come on Hyundai, there are millions of colors in the Pantone book....try some of the prettier ones! and 3. I really would love to have this car as a convertible. Imagine being able to drive a silent car in the forest on a dark, star-lit night watching a meteor shower overhead!

Almost perfect

There is little I don’t love about this car. Exceptionally quiet ride, looks great, roomy inside, holds my gear in back. My complaints are not new: 1) No auto lock upon leaving. Seriously, Hyundai, just write a couple of lines of code and get this fixed. 2) The clearance is too low for a car that has such a huge vulnerability riding on the bottom. 3) Forward attention system is a disaster. I basically can’t use lane centering except when it’s cloudy or at night. Any glare from the Sun and it’s game over. 4) Fix the “#%*< ICCU issue once and for all. Not fun playing Russian Roulette with reliability. Hyundai has the opportunity to advance and become the next Toyota, but this will never happen with the lack of transparency and tepid customer service response. Do better. Would I buy it again? Yes.
