An unexpectedly un-Alva's visit
I'll preface this with I've been a fan of Alva's for longer than anyone who I recognize there has been there. You can find many 5-star reviews from me, and this probably exists between a 2 & a 3 star but I'm giving the benefit of the doubt. TL;DR I feel they should know when to tell a customer it's not their area of expertise and you need to go elsewhere.

A few weeks ago the sliding door on my van tried eating my kid and refused to move back and after extracting child it was moving really rough. I took it in to be looked at and they greased the hell out of it and said there were a couple of parts that probably needed to be replaced later on but it would probably work fine might need adjustment. OK, I'd brought it in to be fixed, not $180 of grease but whatever as long as it worked.

Two days later on Father's Day I'm dropping my kids off at girl scout camp and the sliding door falls off the van and hits my kid. We end up stranded for about 3 hours on Father's day in Ashland City until we get enough tools and parts gathered to remove a couple of pieces of the door (couldn't get a roller on the track, had to remove a roller arm,) and drive home with the sliding door tied to the side (it was only holding on by the floor connector.) Long story about camp councilors holding the door so I could drive it into a parking space and AAA not sending anyone omitted.

Got it into Alva's and they said they'd get it fixed. I couldn't drive it anywhere and had to keep it tarped so they kept it there. About a week later they got the parts and I was told it was done. It's not. It doesn't close without assistance now, and I got charged 4 hours of labor (ended up being about $1000 additional after the greasing from before.) They did attempt to fix the quarter panel that the paint had been destroyed but the door is not not closing on its own, not fixed, just better than it was when I brought it in the first time. He said he thought the wire might have stretched when the door fell off the track... ok, replace the wire?

It was not a great experience, the door is better but not fixed, and I feel like from beginning they should have replaced parts then, or offered to replace parts then as opposed to just getting it working, but I was sent on my way with "bring it back if that doesn't hold" and it didn't, and it damaged the car and hit my kid on the way down.

Something about showing up and being shown how one now has to ease the door into place after yet another incomplete fix doesn't sit well.

It's the sort of situation I've been told from several people now should probably have been handled by a body shop or the dealership.

But I feel this is one of the situations where they attempt to save the customer money and it ends up biting the customer in the rear. Noble goal, but ends up costing more for a not-perfect repair - such as my alternator. Years ago my alternator fried, they replaced with a non-oem and told me they'd saved me a few hundred dollars, the replacement fried, they replaced, that replacement fried and guess what it happened again. They attempted to save me some money on the alternator and I got to spend $300-400 each time getting it replaced under warranty. Sure the alternator was free, but the labor never was. That $500 savings cost ~$800 that they have in their records when I ask about it, ~$1200 that I have in my records because for some reason they're not seeing one of the times it fried. Whatever.

Anyway, $1100 on the door, my kid will not open it because she keeps thinking, regardless of what I tell her, that she was somehow responsible for us being stranded for hours and without a car for weeks.

I'm not angry, I know what they attempted, I know why it failed, and now due to the power of not having a car for a week I now have found the schematics for how the door is supposed to work and know that the track it's on is also damaged and that's what's the cause of the problem probably was.

I work in a trade fixing things, but vehicles aren't one of them. That's why I went to Alva's.
