A solid entry-level EV

The Hyundai Kona electric is better than I expected. It’s bigger inside and outside, and has all the driver safety bells and whistles. For being an entry-level EV it’s quieter inside than I expected.

Perfect for me

Fun to drive. I drive about 30 miles per day. I'm able to keep it charged just by plugging into regular 100 volt outlet at night.

RIYL Constant Surveillance

I got a new car because if I'm going to invest in a car, I want it to be new! I like having an electric vehicle because I hate the fossil fuel industry - but the car I had before this one was a 2007 Toyota subcompact and I miss it all the time. It was so well designed! I'll never get over it. I like that I can use cruise control, I like that the seals don't leak yet, I like that I don't have to care what the price of gasoline is. Owning an EV has truly shown how little our society has invested in EV charging infrastructure and it's infuriating. I'm fortunate to be a homeowner with enough money to afford a level 2 charger for my garage, but before I did that I was always stressed out about when and where I was going to plan to charge, and often public chargers are busy or broken. I like that I can quickly accelerate when I have to get on our terrible freeway onramp, I like regenerative braking, and that I can't lock my own keys in the car. I really dislike how "smart" the car is - but I gather that all cars made in this decade are like this. The user interface of the media console is distracting and kind of clumsy, it honestly makes me feel like I'm less safe of a driver because using it takes so much of my attention away from the road. I really really dislike that the car is collecting data on me and I assume selling it to horrible companies. You have to consent to this to use the Hyundai app, and I'm like "Well... I do want to see the current charge level of the battery... so I guess you can keep track of everything I text and play and say and do and sell it to Palantir or whatever" Please note: I have no idea where the data goes, but isn't the point? You will probably write this off as some screed by a crazy old weirdo but: you asked!

I love driving this car!

This car is the perfect size for me. More space in the garage compared to wedging my 2011 Sonata in there. Handles well, comfortable ride, it's great to finally have Apple CarPlay and a backup camera. I like the automated safety features, although the front collision avoidance is a little aggressive at times, at least for me. I can't really rate performance since I keep it in Eco mode all the time. I'm sure in Sport mode it would be peppier off that starting line, but I don't need that. I'm a great candidate for an EV, since I don't drive a lot and they're usually short trips. I've been able to survive using the included 110-volt "granny" charger most of the time, with occasional stops at a public charging station. I appreciate that Hyundai provided a free adapter for the Tesla charging network, although many stations are restricted to Teslas only.

Love my Kona EV!

I have had my Kona EV for over a year and I am very happy with it. It is just big enough to carry my elderly mother’s walker and my mother can get in and out easily. For one year, I only charged at home with a regular outlet and it was slow, but fine for my driving needs. Now I have a level 2 fast charger and that is amazing. I live in the Pacific Northwest, so finding chargers while on road trips is easy.

Smooth but powerful ride

I fell in love with my Kona the minute I took it for a test drive. I love the way it accelerates without hesitation. It is so quiet my husband is still amazed after 18 month. We take a 140 mile trip about every three weeks and I have no problems. It is a smooth ride on the highway. Setting the Cruze control and steering assist makes it so easy. I would never go back to a gas powered car and my Kona is just the perfect size and price for us.

This is my second three year lease of the Kona EV. Good quality car. Would like it to be more sturdy when driving over bumps and dirt roads. And increase range to 400 miles would be great!!

Love this car. Good range. Responsive.

This is my second Kona EV. I had an accident in the first and I wanted the same car. If I could have afforded it I would have gone with the ionic 5 but this car was a good compromise. I do wish I'd gotten the next level up though as it has some features that I am missing in this one. Over all I love owning an EV. I've had this one for two years and had one service, which was free and just a tire rotation. If you are coming from the gas world you will be very happy with the lack of maintenance. The range is good though I find the miles listed are not completely accurate. For example I regularly make a trip to see my family which is a roundtrip total of 154 miles. The range given when I start is about 300mi. I get back with approximately 80miles of range listed. So there's a difference there of about 66 miles (give or take short drives while there visiting, maybe 5 miles or so tops). If I was taking a road trip I would plan my stops accordingly.

A Starter with some features

Hyundai NA (HBA) was running an ad when we were shopping EV’s January 2024. Besides the good looking ad, there was 250kwh of free charging on Electrify America (EA) network. This attracted us not only the free charging but the pricing strategy from HNA. Overall the buying experience was good from the dealer, the free charging was setup, and managed to use it twice. Then without notice the charging was taken away. Calls to HNA and EA were met with denial. I would caution any buyer if HNA offers a seemingly bait and switch tactic to attract buyers. There also a reason the price point can be made with omission of options.

I am having several issues with the vehicle. The speedometer blanks out, the navigation system randomly turns off, the car has stopped in the middle of the freeway early morning during gusty winds
