Mimi needed a larger vehicle

I traded my retirement car, what I thought would be my last vehicle purchase. I enjoyed the sporty, standard transmission Mazda 3 hatchback and used it tremendously. However the love of my life (grandbaby) came along five years later and didn't stay small very long. It became too physically taxing (to the point of PT) to lift his 43 lbs and center him in his car seat. I spotted a Sant Cruz in my neighborhood and wham! Interior size-wise it was like going to a 747 and TALK ABOUT COMFORT!! The ride is so smooth it made me realize what I missed. I appreciate the lane assist guidance, especially with my special passenger. And why is it when you buy a truck you start to do 'truck' things? Like haul TONS of landscaping rock, chicken feed, plants, strollers, bicycles, etc. It performed flawlessly on two long distance road trips, so much so that my man is getting rid of his VW GTI for something similar. The gas mileage was impressive enough: on both trips I filled at the exact spots I'd fill the Mazda. It's quiet also, a big difference from a smaller car. The vehicle 'talks' to you quite a bit and I appreciate the safety features. My single issue with it is the INABILITY to place a baby car seat in the center of the rear seat, specifically stated in the owner's manual. That makes no sense to me but I'm dealing with it with the most cautious driving.

Great - Except for keys and tailgate.

No virtual keys on the lower trim levels. Cannot add additional keys, so I'm limited to only two key fobs and no virtual keys. Key fob is huge and bulky, and the emergency physical key is separate and not built into the fob. The tailgate locks, which is annoying on an open bed pickup truck. Wish there was a way to keep the tailgate unlocked at all times. The tailgate release is 100% powered, and there is no mechanical release, so I hope the wiring and computer and lock and release motors inside the tailgate can take some abuse and do not become fragile over time.

Great features for the price, drivers info, instrument display fit in the dash without protruding, bed features - lights, adjustable cleats, extra storage a plus.only feature missing was eyeglass holder 😒.

Though I haven't had it long, I love it so far!

Too new to rate it's reliability, but so far, it's been a great vehicle to own. I love the looks, features, comfort, and drivability. I purchased the SE base model yet it's still full of great features. Interior is roomy, and I love the digital screen on the 2025 model. Plenty of room in the bed for what I need as well. Gas mileage has been good so far and the naturally aspirated in line 4 has plenty of pep. I'm not a fan of turbos here in the heat of Texas. I believe this SE base model is a great value, especially considering the average price of a new vehicle these days. I traded in a pretty nice 2018 Ford F 150 for my 2025 Santa Cruz. I have no regrets.

Santa Cruz Summary

The vehicle is comfortable, built well, and fair price. The lack of 7 pin towing wire harness readily available for the 2025 makes it sold under false pretenses so it cannot be used to tow currently, but is sold as if it can.

Miles per gallon is higher than predicted. Pep is low.

Overall very pleased. Does have a bit of road noise compared to my 24 Elatra and Lexus. Not as peppy. I was surprised to I'm getting about 36-7 mpg.
