A few hours after I dropped my vehicle off, I received a courtesy phone call from Jaime informing me that their mechanic had broken a small return valve. He apologized for the mishap and said the car would be ready a day later than expected because a new replacement part had to be ordered. When the car was picked up, I was surprised to have been charged for replacing the valve their mechanic had broken. The cost was a little over $25. At that point, I learned a lesson. The experience was enough for me to make an internal decision not to patronize the establishment in the future.
From a customer's point of view, it seems unusual to pass along a human error to the customer. I did not sign any terms and conditions before dropping the keys off, nor do I recall seeing any written policy on the wall informing the customer that they are liable for the mechanic's error. This raises the question—if the mechanic were to erroneously break a much more expensive piece of equipment on your vehicle, are you liable for its replacement?
When the car was picked up and the cost to replace the valve was invoiced on the final bill, it was questioned; no legit policy was cited, and Jaime and his sister's (the owner) response was generic. In other words, suck it up. Additionally, Jaime's apology acknowledges the mistake. Thank you; I appreciate it! But if you want to do right by the customer, eat the $25 cost or find some common ground that is agreeable for all parties; don't just pass on someone's error to the customer.
Finally, the car service was good. But you lost my future business over bad business practices.
