Comfortable, Quiet, Fun to Drive, and Beautifully Designed

I fell in love with its retro-futuristic design and had always wanted to own this car. After purchasing it, I’ve come to appreciate it even more—the interior is spacious and comfortable, the ride is quiet yet lively, and the fast and stable charging eliminated any EV-related concerns I had. Now that it supports Supercharger access, it’s even better.

Great Car

I didn't expect to become such a huge fan of this car but I really do love it. I use it for a lot of heavy lifting and jobs (I own a plant nursery) so it gets used. I also have an off-grid cabin and go up there regularly. This car doesn't skip a beat.

I see you ICCU...

I love everything about this car, but for one thing that makes me question keeping it. The ICCU, and when it will fail... again. It's an essential component and you can't drive without it. When our ICCU failed, we were fortunate that we weren't commuting. The fix took a good amount of time due to a backlog of ICCU availability due to... the issue happening with other owners. There were 5 cars in line before ours waiting for the same part at our local dealer. We took the car in for each recall to address issues with the ICCU and at this point I'm just waiting for it to fail again. When will it happen? Will it be on the highway? Will I need to wait another month-and-a-half for the repair if it breaks again? Will I still be covered under warranty? Outside of reliability, it's great fun, but I need my car to be reliable first.

2023 IONIQ 5 SEL RWD Matte Gold

I love how the car looks and drives. Exterior and interior look great to me, although I guess this is subjective. Some of the features which need improvement were apparently addressed in next model (wireless Apple CarPlay, free bluelink, rear wiper, no low conductivity coolant replacement). I got a great deal on a certified preowned. The only issue I have had was with 12 volt battery, which appears to be a common issue on many EVs. I had to have AAA come and jump the car.

Vehicle was good until 8500 miles.

After just two years of ownership and approximately 8,500 miles driven, my vehicle has experienced several concerning issues that I believe are unbecoming of the Hyundai brand. Most notably, the foam inside the tires has failed, and now I am experiencing a significant issue with the vehicle’s cooling system. Over the past two months, I have already lost several workdays due to these repairs, and I’ve been informed that the upcoming cooling system service could take up to a month to complete.

I bought it for the EV tech specs and battery architecture.

Good: Great cabin, Good driving characteristics. Relatively low road noise. Great EV platform in general, battery tech, and HVAC heat pump. Not so good: Too many recalls. Lots of on-line paranoia about ICCU failures. Spare tire canister blew up. No back windshield wiper. User interface is too complicated. 100s of pages of owner manual is a bad sign. Self parking features seem impossible to operate. Lousy subject index in user manual. Door panels dent too easily. Dealer salespeople are poorly trained on EVs, don’t know about specs or battery technology or physics.

Great acceleration, fun to drive, concerns about reliability.

Great acceleration, good safety features, love the manual (ie non-touchscreen) controls, comfortable to drive/ride in. It would be nice to have access to more super-fast charging stations for less stressful road trips. (I still haven't gotten my NACS adapter). The car only has 16,000 miles on it but I have already had 2 major issues. The day before I was planning to leave on a trip from Connecticut to Virginia, when we were moving the car from the driveway into the garage, it wouldn't start. We got a message on the screen that the 12V battery was low and we should pull over as soon as it was safe to do so. My husband tested the battery charge and it read only 5.3 volts. He replaced the battery with an AGM battery and we took it to the dealership to be checked out. They did a battery management software update, which led me to think there was a known problem with the battery management software. My husband got a sensor so we can monitor the battery charge level remotely. I shudder to think what would have happened if the 12V battery had failed a day later and left me stranded on the interstate in West Virginia!!! I finally set out on my trip after a 2 week delay and discovered that the air conditioning did not work. (I hadn't had to use it since last fall). When I got to Lynchburg, VA I tried to get an appointment at the Hyundai dealership to get it checked out. They had no open slots for the next 4 weeks so I had an uncomfortably warm drive back to CT. My local dealership checked the A/C and found a small leak right by the compressor. They added sealant to the coolant and it seems to be working fine, but if it fails again I will need a new compressor. As much as I enjoy driving this car, the problems I have already had in only 16,000 miles make me nervous about taking it on road trips.
