Love the car but I can't understand why Hyundai hasn't changed the ICCU already, we know the software updates are not enough as the 2025 model comes with a different ICCU

My favorite car ever.

I love the Ioniq 5. Most aspects of it earn a solid 5 stars. Some of the minor demerits are really no big deal, like the arm rest material is fragile and scuffs and tears too easily. The user interface is sub-par, like no ability to control the battery conditioning except through the navigation function, but still can't manually turn it on. Even with these minor details I would give it 5 stars except for the 12v battery problems and the ICCU issue. I've had the 12v problem myself and know of people who've had the ICCU fiasco. Hyundai seems oblivious to these issues which almost makes me want to give a 3 star rating, but I like the car too much. Just wish Hyundai would get their act together.

2.5 years of ownership

Overall, this is a great car. I have some feedback, some of which I believe may have been addressed in newer models - I have listed those below in the cons section. I have the Limited model with most if not all of the tech, 2 motors, upgraded wheels... It is a blast to drive. I am not admitting to speeding, but I'm not sure how I have not gotten a ticket yet. It is super quick, takes corners like it is on rails and is really responsive. I am 6'4" with a long torso, but I have a lot of headroom. Something that many cars cannot boast. After more than 2 years of ownership, I have no buyer's remorse.

Mostly amazing

I was about to buy an F-150 Lightning to replace my ICE F-150 but decided to give the Ioniq 5 a shot. My prerequisites were taking my dog around and fitting a bike in the back with the seats down without having to remove the front wheel. Check and check. I can also get a 6” ladder in it. The interior is very stylish/futuristic and I get lots of compliments. The acceleration is crazy. I used to always stress making a left onto a busy street. No more. This thing moves. I installed a charger at home and it’s so great not having to go to the gas station. I think I’ve done the math and with the amount I spend on electricity for charging, it’s like getting 90+ MPG. I used to feel so guilty driving my truck because of the emissions and gas consumption. I feel much better driving an EV. It’s not perfect though. The turning radius isn’t great for such a small car. My wife’s Tahoe can make tighter turns. The electronics glitch from time to time but seem to resolve themselves by turning the car off and on again. My biggest complaint is that there’s a standard 12V car battery in it that controls ALL the electronics, door locks, everything. The main [big] battery usually keeps that topped off but you have no way of knowing when the 12V battery is going to die until it does and you are STUCK in the middle of nowhere and can’t even jump start it. This is a terrible design flaw in my opinion. I had to get my car towed from a state park because of a dead 12V battery even when I had over 50% charge remaining. And it died almost 2 years to the day from when I bought the car. So, fix that and it’d be a big improvement.

We love this car

Our Ionic 5 is fun to drive, comfortable, and inexpensive to operate. It has a few flaws, which we hope will be corrected by 2026 when we turn in our lease on this one.

Annoying interior rattles and squeaks. Low mileage at 80% charge.

The rattles and squeaks are very annoying on an otherwise fine vehicle. I am not sure it I would recommend this car to a prospective buyer. The dealer must have charged the vehicle to 100% to make the mileage estimate look good. In reality, the 80% is disappointing.

Love this car. Cool, fast, fun.

We were excited about switching to electric. We did the research and the Ioniq came up as the best buy, and so we tried it, my wife loved it (it's her car) and we were sold. The only downside was the lack of high-speed charging, but Hyundai fixed that by providing the free Tesla port adapter. It was a bit confusing to sign up for that program (we had to call someone to help), but the adapter works great and we no longer have range anxiety.

Could be a great car

I was really wanting my 2023 I5 Limited to be every bit as great as I had hoped when I purchased it in early 2024, but alas, it just hasn't lived up to my expectations. Don't get me wrong, it is a nice car, with lots of bells and whistles, but the ICCU issue and degraded range just are a deal killer for me. When I first purchased the car in March 2024, the range on the Guess-0-Meter would consistently show 220+ miles at 80% SOC. However, I had my local Hyundai dealership do the BMS update in December 2024, and ever since, I can only get the GOM to show between 150-170 miles at 80% SOC. And when I charge to 100% SOC for long road trips, the GOM shows a total range of only 220 miles, which is well short of the advertised 300+ miles range. I mentioned this to my local Hyundai dealership in Spring '25 and they told me that "it's probably the ICCU and if we bring it in to check it, it will sit here for an unknown time since we can't get replacement ICCUs in from Hyundai." Seriously? I plan to bring it later next month to see if things have changed, but I am not holding my breath. If this range issue could be corrected, I would change my tune on this car since everything else about has been stellar so far.
