Ioniq 5 review

Very poor range. Took it in to dealership and they said nothing is wrong with the car. Then car started to not start on occasion, and after 2-3 trips to the dealership they were finally able to figure out that the 12 volt battery was bad. They said it is not covered under our warranty even though we leased it as a new vehicle, and wanted us to pay the $500 plus. How is that even possible or reasonable that it would not be covered under the new car warranty? (It was acknowledged that we had done nothing to void warranty) After several discussions with the dealership and me calling Hyundai directly, along with refusing to pay, the decision was changed to Hyundai covering the cost. We pay over $500 a month to lease the car from Hyundai and with that kind of money, we expect so much more. With the poor quality of the car, treated poorly by Hyundai, we look forward to turning the car back in to Hyundai soon and with how Hyundai has treated us I will not be buying or leasing any more vehicles from Hyundai or Kia. You need to treat your customers so much better.

Love the way it drives but still overall a disappointing experince

Love the way it drives but have unfortunately experienced several things that have went wrong. The ICCU went out at about 11,000 miles and if you look it up it is a very common occurrence, and a very inconvenient one. It required my car to be towed and I was without a car for 2 and a half weeks while it was getting repaired. The only other person I know who owns an Ioniq it also happened to them as well. In addition to this, the interior frame is very clunky with so many rattle noises and it feels very cheap. I had to take my car in again because of a rattle coming from my tailgate which I found a TSB for and had to provide to the dealership so they would know how to fix it. I am still dealing with several other rattle noises that I plan to have fixed but overall it has been an incredibly frustrating vehicle to own.

Great vehicle, almost perfect.

This is my first electric vehicle, and I love it for the most part. The instant torque makes it very fast and fun to drive. Without a combustion engine the interior is very quiet and peaceful. I really have enjoyed not having to visit the gas station. Installing a level 2 charger at home is very convenient. Downside of an electric vehicle is for road trips. Range is a concern and living in Kansas charging stations are few and far between. We love the car around town but take my wife's gas-powered vehicle for out-of-town trips. Overall great vehicle for everyday use. If you drive a lot of miles you may want to stick with a combustion engine until the infrastructure improves or range of the EV vehicles improve.

ICCU and 12V battery doom this car

The Ioniq 5 is plagued with issues in it's ICCU design leading to numerous recalls. The 12V battery required replacement after only 18 months. There are serious design flaws which Hyundai has not fixed. This is unforgiven given the high price of the vehicle.

0 stars because the Hyundai dealership lied to me about when i got into their vehicle they promised me free charging and followed deceptive practice the only way i could get free charging is if i bought another car so they transferred my lease to this one when they lied to be about getting the hyundai kona ev would get free charging and after i signed paper work and was told they said oh actually they dont have it anymore. I know the name of the exact sales person that said it he still works there I would never recommend that dealership im fact I encourage people not to go there becasue what they did to me was deceptive

Dependable Solar Fun

Overall love the car! 2 complaints being that our ‘23 Ioniq limited could very well have been equipped with a rear windshield wiper, like most premium vehicles. Also, the rear of the trunk area is not without grunts, squeaks & groans during normal driving, would like complete silence/sturdiness 🤫

Great car but needs improvement

I've been driving the Ioniq 5 for a while now, and overall it's a genuinely good EV — comfortable, quick, great tech, and the styling still turns heads. But there's one issue that keeps me from fully recommending it without a big caveat: the ICCU (Integrated Charging Control Unit) failures. This isn't a minor glitch — when the ICCU fails, the car can lose the ability to charge or even drive normally, sometimes leaving people stranded. Hyundai issued a software update meant to address it, but the problem hasn't actually gone away. I personally know owners who got the update and still ended up needing the ICCU replaced outright. That's not reassuring when it's presented as a fix. That uncertainty weighs on you especially on road trips, particularly to rural areas where charging infrastructure and service centers are sparse. Knowing there's a real chance of a charging-system failure hours from the nearest dealer makes it hard to relax behind the wheel. Speaking of dealers — service quality and EV-specific knowledge are hit or miss. Too many service advisors and techs still seem unfamiliar with EV systems, which means diagnosis and repairs take longer than they should, and you're left explaining your own car's issues to the people supposed to be fixing it. Bottom line: The Ioniq 5 is a fantastic EV on paper and in daily driving — but Hyundai needs to actually solve the ICCU issue (not just patch it) and invest in better dealer training before I'd call it a fully trustworthy road-trip companion.

Untrustworthy

Although the warranty on the iccu has been extended we’re afraid to do any long distance traveling due to lack of trust in the iccu. We don’t want to be broken down out of state. It blew with 6000 miles and who know when it will happen again. I still have to maintain a ice car for travel

I love it but I wish it would stop trying to outsmart me.

Super tight, quiet, comfortable car. I really love it on so many aspects. Charging at home is amazingly convenient and my initial range anxiety has proven to be a non issue. Love the car! Yet... In their attempt to automate things and build in interlocks to make it safe, they have made it impossible for me to control the car in a smart manner. -stop locking the doors! If I want them locked, I'll lock them! -I often drive the 100 meters from my house to my barn. No need for seatbelts here. Yet the car will lock the parking brake on until I buckle up. RIDICULOUS. It also locks the doors while it is at it. I am going to my barn to load things yet I have to go the extra step of unlocking. JUST LET ME HAVE CONTROL! -Utility mode is way too hard to implement. We have a small dog who stays in the car while we go about our business. It makes perfect sense to turn on utility mode with air conditioning then lock the car while we do our thing. Yet starting utility mode disables the fob from locking or unlocking the car. This is silly and difficult. I have to use the physical key to lock and unlock the car. It makes no sense to disable the fob! If the software is so smart, it ought to have one touch "Dog Mode" (like the Tesla does). -The ability to use the car's battery to supply AC power to external devices is great. It allows me to use the car as a 1500 watt backup generator. Yet the car absolutely will not allow me to take it below 20% battery. Again, stop with the control! I understand the risk. If I want to set that value a little lower, let me. Again, overall the car gets high marks. Just stop it with the philosophy of the car not allowing me to do what I want with it.

It would be perfect if Hyundai would fix the ICCU issue.

I love my Ioniq 5, it handles well in all conditions. I wish that Hyundai would finally fix the ICCU issues that they choose to ignore. I am afraid to take it on long trips due to this issue. I also am not happy with the service department at Morrie's 394 Hyundai.
