No Parts Available

I am basically paying for a car I am not driving. My car has been at Mission Hills Hyundai for about 4 months waiting for a door handle which broke shortly after I leased it. I want out of my lease, with out penalty. And I cannot in the future recommend Hyundai cars.

Battery going dead makes the vehicle unreliable.

ICCU and Battery issues make the vehicle unreliable, as you never know when you are going to be stuck somewhere.

Drives well, but some features are problematic

I have no complaints about the way it drives. Acceleration is great. Steering responsiveness is good. Driver's seat is comfortable. Controls are relatively intuitive and easy to use. Sound system sounds good. The turning circle is pretty wide which makes it not the easiest to park in congested parking lots, and hard to make U-turns on narrow streets. I have issues with some of the driver convenience and safety features. I have a Honda CRV (2017) that has some of these same features which I find useful, but on the Ioniq I find them much more sensitive and not useful - or distracting - for that reason. Your feeling about these may vary somewhat depending on driving style - here's my experience: * Lane keep assist seems to want to keep me right in the middle of the lane. My habit is to drive towards the right edge of the lane, away from oncoming traffic. I find that it fights me more than I would like so I have turned it off. I would want it to only alert me if I am actually leaving the lane. * The scope of blind spot detection is too wide. The only real blind spot in the vehicle just off the rear bumper on the drivers' side, but even allowing that it can also be useful to have monitoring on the passenger side, the "blind spot" zone extends well back past the back of the vehicle on both sides, and doesn't seem to update very fast, so that even when I am changing lanes after passing a vehicle it can sound an alarm and try to steer me back into my lane. I temporarily turned it off but that turned of the blind spot indicators on the side mirrors as well, not just the alarm and corrective action, so for now I have decided having it on is the lesser of two evils. * It will sometimes sound a collision warning when I am going around a bend in the road and temporarily facing towards a car parked on the side of the road * The stability/traction control seems to kick in when I go over a small bump or pothole, making me wonder momentarily why the vehicle seems to have lost power A few other issues with the tech features: * You can set the level regeneration you want to kick in when you take your foot off the accelerator. I like to keep it at 0 so the car will coast when I take my foot off, like a traditional non-EV. But, for some reason, while it will remember the last setting for levels 1, 2 and 3, it will not allow you to start in level 0 when you start the car, so I have to change it back from 1 every time. It also won't let you change it while in reverse, which is just another little annoyance. * I have disabled the feature that automatically unlocks the car when you approach, since it would unlock any time I went into my driveway, even if I wasn't getting in the car. I believe the doors will at least automatically relock after some time if not opened, but I still find it annoying that it's constantly unlocking and locking. * Worse is the automatic trunk opening. This is supposed to open the trunk automatically if you're standing next to it, if you're trying to put something in but your hands are full and you can't open it. But it's far too sensitive - especially when using a digital key on my phone. I can't stand within 4 feet of the trunk without it starting to beep to say it's starting the opening process, and more than once I've had it open while just walking past the car on the way somewhere else. * Automatic highway lane change works as intended, I guess, but I have that turned off as well. It will automatically steer the car into the next lane if you put the indicator on and it's safe to do so. But it's pretty conservative, and it can't speed up or slow down to pull into a gap in traffic, so it's really only handling the easy lane-changes, which were easy anyway. But if you start to make a lane change that it can't make itself due to "conditions not met" then it will beep at you to alert you, which is a distracting thing to happen in the middle of a lane change because you don't know immediately if it's just "conditions not met" or a blind spot warning or a collision warning. So I find it safer to keep it turned off. * Built-in navigation is bad. The look of it is OK, but it consistently gives me much worse and slower directions than Google Maps. One more dislike: The low-profile door handles are annoying for a couple of reasons: 1. they're less ergonomic than a handle that you can just reach out and pull - both because you have to unlock the car first and wait for it to pop out before you can open the door, and also because it's harder to hold and pull on a "stick" than it is on a curved handle attached at both ends. 2. It means that if your car is unlocked that information is being broadcast for all to see by the handles sticking out. It's an advertisement for any opportunistic criminal who wants to see what they can grab from your car.

Unable to get repair parts

Waiting for 4 months to get a replacement bumper part. No response from Hyundai, paying thousands for car rental, after insurance coverage ran out. Very frustrated and upset about lack of customer support.

A Solid EV, With Some Issues To Be Addressed

I traded in a 2021 Tesla Y for my 2025 Ioniq 5 Limited. Performance is excellent, and passenger comfort and ride are superior to Tesla. Storage is far inferior to Tesla, because Tesla leaves the front trunk (frunk) and the rear undertrunk empty, while Hyundai fills these spaces with components. The driver console space is also much smaller in the Hyundai. Console functions and user settings, relatively simple in the Tesla, are also overly complicated in the Hyundai. (For example, it is easy to inadvertently turn the headlights off.) Although the heads up navigation (HUD) is supposed to support Google Maps, I have been unable to make that happen, and Hyundai's proprietary navigation is inferior to Google Maps. And, unlike Tesla, Hyundai provides is no option for the car to turn off and lock itself when the driver leaves the car. The phone app usually work remotely, but is sometimes slow to respond, and sometimes signs out, requiring manual sign-in, so it's always necessary to keep the huge fob with you to make sure you can unlock and operate the car if you can't sign in to the app.

Overall good design and performance, with a few undesirable behaviors

There is a lot I like about the vehicle, it drives well, is intuitively laid out and is comfortable. A few key items that I would love to see improved (maybe by software update?) 1. Allow me to separately control safety alerts and responses. On multiple occasions automatic safety control features have at minimum been a nuisance, but in at least one case created a dangerous situation so I have disabled them. Unfortunately, this also seems to disable alerts, which I would prefer to retain even if I don't want the car braking for me. - The dangerous situation is when pulling out of a parallel parking spot, the car sensed another vehicle in the blind spot (which I had seen, but was moving at a speed such that I had enough time to safely enter the roadway). The car automatically applied the brakes, stranding me more than halfway into the lane in the middle of the flow of traffic. Luckily the car behind was paying attention and applied the brakes and didn't hit me (it couldn't have swerved out of the way due to cars in the left turn lane), but the "safety" feature definitely put me in harms way, where I otherwise would've safely entered the flow of traffic. - The nuisance version which also comes to mind is also in a parallel parking spot, as I was what should've been a ~3 point turn to exit a spot, the car applied the brakes suddenly while I was backing up with about at least foot of distance to the other cars bumper. This behavior changed what should've been a 3 point turn to a 7 point turn as it robbed me of a couple feet of room I could've otherwise used in the maneuver. 2. Would love to be able to access/ download and archive the data in the EV history screen. Also would be great if I could set one of the custom keys to go straight to that screen. 3. We keep getting an alert to check assistant related things, but no real specifics on what to check/where. 4. Allow persistence of i-pedal settings with a specific driver profile. If I want to always or usually do one peddle drive, having it reset to level 3 each time I start the car is not only annoying, but possibly dangerous (the driver may get used to the level of deceleration in i-pedal, and not brake enough after it resets to level 3). 5. Turn on the last used audio source when loading a profile (I like that android audio is available right when I turn the car on, but I usually listen to the radio, so it's annoying to have to change source every time. 6 I've tried the auto lane keeping, and it needs a little work as it sways back and forth in the lane a bit, and initiate the turn a little late going into curves. 7. WiFi would be a nice feature, if it wasn't locked to a specific carrier. It is infuriating to me when car manufacturers do this. I have chosen my cellular carrier for my own reasons, and would love to use the WiFi feature if I could add it to my existing plan. Providing this feature unlocked from the carrier (using either sim or esim), would make it useful, however I will not, however, open a new, separate plan with a different carrier just to have wifi from the car, making the feature completely useless. This also applies to the case where I might use the carrier today, but decide to change carriers in the future for any of the valid and personal reasons one may choose to do (join a work or family plan, better coverage in area, better pricing or options, better performance, etc).

The Ioniq 5 is a powerful all-wheel drive vehicle that has a host of autonomous-like safety features. I’m so glad I waited for this model, and didn’t buy a Tesla a few years back!
