Never owned this car but it saved my life
I received a review request from Hyundai even though I never officially owned a 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Limited, but I felt compelled to share my experience because that vehicle may have saved my life.
In November 2023, just before Thanksgiving, my husband and I were traveling home from Michigan. We were nearly stopped in traffic on I-75 near Lima, Ohio after being on the road for several hours when we were rear-ended by a vehicle traveling around 60 mph In Stopped traffic I was behind a SEMI . The impact was severe enough to spin our Ioniq 5 across the freeway and we landed in the grass almost on the other side of the interstate .
Despite the violence of the crash, we were able to walk away without serious injuries. I firmly believe Hyundai’s engineering, safety systems, and vehicle structure played a major role in protecting us that day.
What makes this experience even more meaningful is that it happened during one of the most difficult periods of my life, the first year after losing my mother to cervical and ovarian cancer. A situation that could have become another tragedy instead ended with my family making it home safely.
I’ve owned three Hyundai Sonatas and currently drive a 2018 Genesis G80. Throughout the years, Hyundai vehicles have treated me well, but this experience gave me a completely different level of respect for the company. When people talk about safety ratings, they often sound like numbers on paper. For me, those ratings became reality.
Thank you to the engineers, designers, and safety teams who helped create a vehicle capable of protecting occupants during such a serious collision. Because of that work, my husband and I are still here today.
